Chemistry house
Standing along a relatively quieter end of Victoria Street, near the junction of Arab Street, there is the sound of chattering people in a distance. Looking upwards, a giant backlit stainless steel logo sits solidly on a charcoal grey shophouse – as if pointing towards a balcony full of people on the roof terrace next to it. Welcome to the Chemistry house.

The Neighborhood

Tucked away at the fringes of Kampong Glam, the Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan) serves as a picturesque backdrop as you approach the Chemistry House. Being the historical residence of Malay royalty whilst located at the fringe of Singapore’s city centre, the area is steeped with rich heritage, colourful cultures and bustling with diverse business activities.

Chemistry House is also positioned at the edge of the city’s new and exciting creative district where a host of creative institutions such as School of the Arts (SoTA), Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LaSalle College of the Arts have established themselves.

This unique mix of young bohemian entrepreneurs, business executives and art students contributes to a vibe which is both diverse and stimulating for the creative mind. This coupled with the finely balanced juxtaposition of old world serenity and modern city buzz sets up the environment that is Chemistry House.

The coolest part of Singapore. There are many individual shops, each has its identity and is very design-driven, unlike the run-of-the-mill shops in the malls." - British tourist, graphic designer Anju Kathuria, 27

Details of the space

From the outside, the Chemistry House stands out with an honest utilitarian disposition drawn from the lack of embellishments which a shophouse typically carries. The neutral charcoal grey exterior with silver metallic shutters lends itself a solid and monolithic foundation that bears a giant Chemistry badge.

Up the end of a flight of walnut stained timber stairs leads you directly to the mezzanine. The mezzanine is a meeting room which comfortably sits 12 people. A floor to ceiling clear panel allows a glimpse of the work studio below which adds to the lofty feel of the space.

The work studio area sits on the 2nd floor. This is where chemistry creates ideas. An exposed brick wall runs all the way up to the mezzanine floor. The spotlights highlight the rawness in its texture which reflects the ordered chaos that goes on in this space where alchemy happens and ideas are concocted.

At the back end of the work studio is the roof terrace. Over looking the main road of Victoria Street, the terrace has great visibility. From the deck, a window opens directly into the pantry area, facilitating access to the service (read drinks). This space serves main 2 purposes, firstly as an outdoor meeting space where casual brainstorming discussions can be facilitated and secondly as a venue for casual gatherings between work partners and friends.

“The outdoor deck has proved to be a great space to bring together an eclectic mix of people. Great ideas can be spawned with the right chemistry of people… over some food and a few drinks of course.” - Chemistry creative director Bassam Jabry.
