Zurich Insurance approached us with the need to enhance their design integration across various business units (BUs). They required a comprehensive Design Maturity Assessment tool that could pinpoint their current design capabilities and identify areas for improvement. The challenge was to create a bespoke solution that not only leveraged existing and credible frameworks but also incorporated Zurich-specific examples and business unit references.
The primary goal was to enable Zurich's BUs to better understand their design maturity, learn from comparisons with other BUs, and take actionable steps to integrate design more strategically into their operations. By addressing these needs, the tool aimed to foster a culture of continuous improvement and upskilling within Zurich.
Research interviews and creative sessions were carried out with design practitioners and decision makers. This provided the foundation to understand the broad spectrum of needs across the global organisation. Critically we worked to uncover what design maturity should look like in order to play an impact driven role in this highly regulated and country specific business sector.
Working closely with Zurich's design team at global level, we created a tailor made framework that would speak to the BU's business needs and frame the value of stepping up to the next level of design value.
The result was delivered in a jargon free and interactive format that enabled both design practitioners and leader managers to quickly get quantified results and tailored recommendations. Most importantly it created an opportunity to engage in a constructive dialogue around key areas driving design maturity. These included leadership, investment, training and career progression among others.
The framework is being rolled out globally in 2024.
